Future Generations

Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn, NY

January 7, 2017

A heavy snow storm did not deter the sold out crowd from showing up in herds to see rising indie-pop band Future Generations headline at Rough Trade. FG took the stage around 11 and began with "Thunder in the City," a groovy song about lead singer and songwriter Eddie Gore's feelings as he experiences life in New York (as he is originally from Nashville). An excellent song to get the people swaying. This was followed up with "Rain," which features excellent drumming from Berklee grad Dylan Wells and addictive keyboards (organ) from Gore.

From start to finish, FG emanated feelings of happiness and excitement from the stage to and throughout the packed crowd. A concert is so much more enojyable when the audience can feed off of the band's positive energy. "We had so much fun up there," remarked Mike Sansevere, the man who wears many hats in the band, i.e. synth, guitar, keyboard, dancer, pro head-bopper. Featured in the set was a cover of "Stoned" by Widowspeak, a song Gore explained meant a lot to the band at the moment. Wide smiles grew across the faces on stage as a curious one spread across mine. I wonder what some of the band is up to in their free time!

They ended with their biggest hit, "Stars" which was written and produced back when the band still went by The Suits (and was reworked in 2016 for the album). The crowd sang and jumped along, and afterwards cheered for an encore. The modest young men of FG seemed thrilled to fulfill the fans' request and came back out to play "Marlboro," a song not featured on their album.

When it comes down to it, these guys are great musicians, songwriters, and performers, and Gore has a standout voice, reminiscent of Mark Foster (of Foster the People) and Andrew VanWyngarden (of MGMT) that fits their sound very well. This was my fourth time seeing the band since 2015, and it's been incredible to see how they and their fan base have grown. To both sell out a well-respected venue in Brooklyn and to bring in a crowd that know the words to all their songs is an impressive feat for a band rising in popularity. Check them out on Twitter, Facebook, and on Spotify. They will be back in Brooklyn on February 18th with Savoir Adore and Rodes Rollins at the Brooklyn Bazaar.
