Father, Father - Jay Prince
East London native Jay Prince is absolutely an artist to watch, if not catch up on, in 2017. His style marries 90s hip-hop with rap of today. Today's Song of the Day, "Father, Father" sounds a lot like Kendrick and Kanye at the same time. He superbly samples gospel music like early Kanye loved to do and raps in a similar flow and pattern to Kendrick. His whole mixtape, Smile Good sounds similar to the work of Chance the Rapper, who he toured with in Europe. Despite sounding similar to other artists, Prince absolutely makes it work. His music remains fresh and has his own personal and London twist.
In an interview with Pigeons and Planes he states, "With this mixtape I wanted to highlight the hard times in my life, my background, my upbringing, relationships I have been in, and also my religion. All the pivotal moments that have made me who I am at this moment in time."
